How should we automate tasks?
Short Answer:
Follow the lessons learned by Elon Musk – automate last. Search for his “Algorithm” – there’s an excellent Inc. magazine article on Musk’s algorithm that details the handful of steps you take before automating any task. I detailed something similar via a process I called LEAD:
- List all the steps and tasks to be accomplished.
- Eliminate everything that is redundant and dumb – question everything and why someone is still doing something.
- Automate as many of the remaining tasks as possible – AI making this easier by the day.
- Delegate to people what can’t be automated (yet!).
In short, streamline as much as possible before automating – otherwise you’ll just speed up the mess.
